What is Class I, Division 2?
Class I, Division 2 is a classification for hazardous locations in the National Electrical Code (NEC). Hazardous locations are areas where there is a risk of fire or explosion due to the presence of flammable gases, liquids, or dust.
Class I, Division 2 locations are areas where flammable gases, liquids, or dust may be in the air in amounts not sufficient to cause an explosion or ignition. These locations are considered less hazardous than Class I, Division 1 locations, where the concentration of flammable substances is high enough to cause an explosion or ignition.
In Class I, Division 2 locations, electrical equipment and devices must be designed and constructed to prevent ignition of flammable gases, liquids, or dust that may be present in the air. This usually involves the use of special casings, gaskets, and other protective measures to prevent the ignition of flammable substances.
The NEC specifies the requirements for electrical equipment and devices used in Class I, Division 2 locations, including the types of enclosures, seals, and protective measures that must be used to ensure the safety of the equipment. These requirements are intended to help prevent fires and explosions in hazardous locations and to protect people and property.
